JNUMC Programmes

The Club conducts high-altitude trekking (from 9,000 ft to 19,000 ft approximately) in the Garhwal / Kumaon / Himachal / Ladakh / Nepal and Eastern Himalayas. Every year the Club organizes four treks - the Desert Trek (January), Snow Trek (February/March), Summer Trek (May), Autumn Trek (September/October). It also conducts rockclimbing, cross-country cycling and moonlight trips every year.

A unique feature about the Club treks is that members of the team carry their own rucksacks, rations, tents, utensils, pitch tents and cook food themselves. The Club as a principle only ventures on out-of-the-way routes and tries to avoid popular treks, preferring to conduct its treks during off-season when they are more challenging and brings out the best from the participants. Most of the programmes organized by the Club are sponsored by the Sports Office of the University, whereby students get around fifty per cent refund of the fee charged on successful completion of the programme. The Club acknowledges and appreciates the support and personal interest shown by Mrs. Damayanti V Tambay, Deputy Director Physical Education, Dr. Shankari Sundararaman, Chairman of Sports Committee, Mr. Vikram Singh, Assistant Director Physical Education and Prof. Kale, Dean of Students on whose recommendation financial grants are sanctioned for the various programmes conducted by the Club. The Club also sends its members to mountaineering institutes such as the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, and the Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, to attend Basic and Advance Mountaineering, Method of Instruction, Search and Rescue courses.

The Club also in association with the NAF, sends its members to attend Basic Paragliding Course (Manali, H.P), Basic Snow Skiing Course (Manali/Kufri/Narkanda, H.P), White Water Rafting (Shivpuri, near Rishikesh, Uttaranchal), Basic Kayaking and Sea Awareness programmes. All these programmes, which were previously sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, and coordinated by NAF are now offered by the latter on commercial basis without the subsidy of the UGC.
